If someone in Sheffield searches "estate agent near me" or someone in Bradford looks for “local designer”, who shows up in the search results? Hopefully, it’s local businesses that provide the services you’re searching for. But what happens when you fit these criteria, but you aren’t appearing in the search results?

For most Yorkshire businesses, the answer to appearing in local search results comes down to a handful of simple things that often get overlooked. The good news is that local SEO doesn't necessarily need a huge budget or months of work, and there are a few quick wins you can tackle this month.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

This is the single most valuable free tool for local visibility. If you haven't claimed your profile, do it today. If you have, check that it's actually finished and that all the information on there is correct.

  • Make sure your business name, address and phone number are correct

  • Choose the right primary category (this matters more than people think)

  • Add your opening hours, including any changes for bank holidays

  • Write a clear description that mentions what you do and where you do it

  • Upload good-quality photos of your premises, your team and your work

An incomplete profile gives Google less to work with, and gives customers less reason to choose you.

2. Keep your details consistent everywhere

Google cross-checks your business information across the web. If your address is written one way on your website, another on Facebook and a third in an old directory listing, it can weaken trust in your listing.

Pick one format for your name, address and phone number, then check your website, social profiles and any directories you're listed in. Fixing a few mismatches is a quick job with a real payoff.

3. Ask for reviews, and reply to them

Reviews are a major local ranking factor, and they're also what people read before they pick up the phone so it’s important to fill your Google Business Profile with as many positive reviews as you can.

A few tips for collecting good reviews are:

  • Asking happy clients/customers at the right moment, such as straight after a successful completion or project

  • Send a direct link to make leaving a review as easy as possible

  • Reply to every review, positive or negative, in a professional and personable way

Aim for steady, regular reviews rather than a burst followed by months of silence and make sure to respond to every comment as soon as you can. You should receive an email notifying you when you get a review on your profile so you don’t have to constantly check the page.

4. Put your location in the right places on your website

Make sure Google and your customers can tell where you operate. Check that your main service pages, title tags and meta descriptions mention the towns and areas you cover where it's natural to do so.

If you serve several areas, such as Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley and Chesterfield, consider creating a dedicated page for each. Write genuinely useful, local content rather than copying the same text and swapping the place name. Google can spot the difference, and so can readers.

5. Create content that's actually local

Content that speaks to your area gives you an edge over national competitors. A few ideas include:

  • A guide to a local neighbourhood, market or event

  • Commentary on what's happening in your sector in Yorkshire

  • Case studies featuring local clients (with their permission)

  • Roundups of local news that affects your customers

This kind of content builds relevance for local searches and gives you something worth sharing on social media. Content like this is also great to re-share and re-use again and again across your marketing, so it’s worthwhile taking the time to work on throughout the year.

6. Earn links from local sources

Links from relevant local websites send a strong signal to Google that your website is trustworthy and worth sending traffic to. Look for realistic opportunities where you can get mentions online like:

  • Your local chamber of commerce

  • Local press and online news sites

  • Business networks and industry bodies

  • Charities and community groups you support

  • Event organisers, if you sponsor or take part

A good press release or a strong local story can earn coverage and a link at the same time, which is where PR and SEO work well together. If you need help with combining PR into your marketing strategy for SEO, make sure to book a chat with our team.

7. Check your website works well on mobile

A lot of local searches happen on a phone, especially if a customer is looking for directions to your business, so it’s important that your website is well optimised for mobile.

Open your website on your own phone and ask yourself:

  • Does it load quickly?

  • Is your phone number tappable?

  • Is it obvious how to get in touch or find you?

Fixing a slow page or a hidden contact button can directly affect enquiries.

Where to start

You don't have to do everything at once. If you only have an hour, start with your Google Business Profile and your reviews and then work through the rest across the month.

Local SEO is a steady game. Small, consistent improvements add up, and your competitors may not be doing them, which in time can give you an advantage.
