Social content days are a key part of life at a creative agency. These dedicated production days can provide weeks or even months' worth of content, from behind-the-scenes footage and product photography to lifestyle imagery and social media videos. With so much valuable content being created in a single session, it's important to go in with the right preparation, tools and mindset to get as much out of the day as possible.

Have a good itinerary

Going in with a plan of what you hope to capture and create will immensely improve your day. Think of ideas based on your clients' activities and upcoming projects, the social calendar, trends that’ll work creatively for the client and important announcements that need to be shared. Once you have this, make an itinerary and share it with the whole team, and the client so that everyone knows what you are aiming to achieve during the day.

Use competitor analysis to your advantage

Competitor analysis is more than simply copying what everyone else in your client's industry is doing. Frequent competitor analysis is a good way to gather inspiration and spark unique ideas at the same time, especially before a content day. See how others are responding to industry changes and new types of content they’re doing. Also take a look at what they’re not doing, and use it to think of ways you can make your client stand out and shine in their upcoming content. This way, your content is informed by what's already working while still giving your client the opportunity to stand out from the competition.

Capture more content than you think you'll need

It's always better to leave a content day with too much footage than not enough. Film multiple angles, candid moments and plenty of B-roll alongside your planned content. These extra clips can be invaluable when editing, repurposing content for different platforms or filling gaps in your content calendar.

Think about every platform

Not every piece of content works across every social media platform, so it's important to consider where your content will be shared before filming. Think about how your content should differ for LinkedIn, Instagram or TikTok, and let this influence everything from the location and backgrounds to the style of filming and messaging. For example, LinkedIn content may require a more professional setting, while Instagram and TikTok often perform better with a more relaxed, behind-the-scenes feel. Planning for each platform from the outset will help you create content that feels authentic and performs well wherever it's shared.

Build a relationship with your client

Most importantly, take the time to build a genuine relationship with your client. Getting to know them as a business, understanding their team and learning about their brand values will help everyone feel more comfortable in front of the camera. A relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere often leads to more natural, authentic content, allowing personalities to shine through. Not only will this make the content day more enjoyable, but it will also strengthen your working relationship and make future content days even more successful.
